Unit 9 – characteristics and contexts in media and communication

 

For this unit, I am tasked with producing a version of an iconic movie scene or recreating film posters with a Preston’s College twist. To create this twist we are to use staff and students from our course.  Preston’s College is due to host an event and are showcasing the creative media department in an attempt to entice new students for upcoming years, Our work has to be of the highest quality as it is due to be displayed to viewers as a representation of the college.

This particular poster is created in a way that is used to express the violent plot-line of the film. The creators have used stereotypical clothing and aspects in an attempt to represent Football Hooligans in a menacing way. The designer of the poster created a direct contrast between the weapons and their clothing, i think the designer has done this as a way to show how the “the Football Casuals” changed the face of British football. the casual style is and was a well known style adopted by Football Hooligans in a way to express specific meanings and as a social statement, rather than suits and ties, these men chose expensive Italian clothing and bright sportswear. i believe the contrast in colour may also have been used to show what the focus of the poster is meant to be, this kind of clothing is stereotypical and helps inform the audience about the plotline of the film. the creator has also kept a simple white background with shadows, this as a viewer makes me think that these men are the main focus of this particular film. i would like to use this poster and put a Preston’s College twist by switching the people to students and recreating the poster. Personally i think this posters good due to the fact that it is fairly simple but informs the audience exactly what their about to watch.

the poster for Terminator 2 shows the famous actor Arnold Schwarzenegger riding on a motorcycle holding a shotgun. this particular poster is a “Cult Classic” well known as one of the most successful films of the early 1990s. the poster takes on a dark almost monochrome tone as a way to create a sinister effect, this poster does not follow all the typical unwritten rules of photography as Schwarzenegger is offset slightly to the right, this could have been done as a way to keep the focus on everything rather than just him. the photographer has used side lighting as a way to highlight surfaces and one side of Schwarzenegger’s face, this gives connotations of something sinister as though he is up to no good. the photo looks particularly like it has been captured within a photography studio. For my recreation i would like to create a more satirical version of the poster using a student as an actor and changing the Vehicle to something a lot less menacing. Personally i like this poster as it has been thought about in a way that influences the viewers opinion on Schwarzenegger in a way that helps the film manipulate the viewers thoughts.

overall, i personally think my work came out really well, I am happy with my final outcomes as i believe they look professional and fit the brief of the “P col twist”. i picked these two particular posters to recreate as i thought it would help expand my portfolio and give me the opportunity to practice with different genres. if i was to do this particular project again i would revisit the “Germinator” poster as i believe the quality of the poster could have been a bit better. i believe the poster could have been higher quality if i just spent a little more time defining the writing and developing my Photoshop skills further. at the start of this project i didn’t really know many of the tools i could have utilized to create work of a higher standard but over the period of this project i have steadily developed my skills. i have learnt some blending effects to make my photos look more fitting during editing, i have learnt about how to use layer masks to manipulate certain parts of the photos color along with many other tools. i feel like personally, i have met the specific criteria due to the fact that i believe my work came out at some of the highest quality so far.most aspects of the production went well so there wasn’t anything that put me behind schedule.
