Task Overview
during this unit i am required to emulate and take inspiration from a number of various photographers to create research, practical outcomes and an appropriate evaluation. the brief also states that i am to take inspiration from practicing photographers across various genres, this can help underpin my practice and allow me to confirm my strengths and experiment thoroughly.
Research and Analysis

this image shows a young man who refuses to follow societies standards and tries to express himself in a way that society at the time did not condone, the man has a kind of punk/alternative aesthetic. i think this image shows a lot of emotion as it shows his frustration towards people around him. personally i think this image shows contrast between him, a “free soul”, and the people around him who follow societies standards. Also his writing shows more emotion as it shows he is not trying to be friendly, as part of his audience, personally i think he’s showing anger in his writing as he has given up trying to make connections to people who judge him. his writing also shows that he is still in control of his emotions and expresses he is a strong minded person. i think this image has been taken to show contrast between people who follow the crowd and people who choose to live their own life. Jim Goldberg’s photograph is a good example as it is pretty clear that it has a greater meaning. the composition of this piece follows the correct codes and conventions. Jim Goldberg ensured he had his focus point in the centre of the shot, he also ensures he doesn’t crop the photo in a way that cuts any limbs off the subject. i think Jim Goldberg’s work could heavily influence my work, i believe Jim’s photos tell a story in more detail than most other photographers with the way he captures their emotion in their statements. Personally i like Jim Goldberg’s work due to how effective it is in telling a story, there are plenty of thoughts you can gather from the photo but the statement explains the individuals point of view.

this is another photo from the photographer Jim Goldberg, the image shows an old man stood in a sort of clinical environment, this gives the impression that he maybe has partially lost his independence. the man’s face is full of grief showing that he is not particularly happy. his emotions show that he is still grieving for how good his life used to be. i think this image has been taken as a way to show the stages of life and how grief effects us, the man has lived a long and happy life but now he no longer feels the joy. this photo might have been taken as a way to express how we need to mentally and physically support our elders and show respect for the things they did to shape the world of today. Jim uses the correct composition for this photograph as he ensures the subject is in the middle of the shot. he keeps the background plain and simple as a way to ensure that all the focus is on the man. i think this photo connects to my intentions as it expresses an important message that deserves to be published. his reasonings behind this photo were to give this old man a voice to communicate his grief. I like this photo as i believe it is respectful and for all the right reasons.

This image shows what i presume is a mother and daughter posing in what seems to be their home, an environment they should be comfortable in. around them in the background is items of furniture and various electrical’s that belong to them. i think this photo would have been taken as a way to express how hard life can be for single parents and their children emotionally, physically and financially. this picture follows rule of thirds as the focus point is within the centre of the composition. i think i can let this particular piece of work could influence my work, i think the underlying meaning is something that i would like to use in my work. personally i think the work is good because it helps highlight a topic thats often overlooked by society.
Final Shoots

personally, i like the composition of this particular photograph as i feel as though it expresses a passion for his career and how it influences his life. the way the shot is composed shows the librarian in focus and his background slightly out of focus, this gives the perception of depth. i tried to stick to Jim Goldberg’s artistic style in a way that mimics his ways. the brief text gives the audience an insight into whats important about this photo. in particular, books are an important reference as books have purpose, without books we wouldn’t have the rich history and important historical documents. i wanted to show this in my picture as a way to create an image that gets the demographic thinking about a deeper meaning. books give annotations of permanence and something thats going to keep a persons legacy going. if i was to do this project again, i would print the photo off and stick it on an a4 piece of paper as i feel like an analogue style would suit this particular project.
