hot fuzz opening scene analysis

camera shots –

in the first scene the camera crew use a long shot to show sergeant Nicholas Angel walking towards the met offices desk. they do this to show the effort he goes through to be professional and do his job exceptionally. The audience can connote this character is an integral part of the story as the length of the shot is very long and focuses entirely on this character. This works to immerse the audience in the action film.

they use invisible editing when he pulls out his police identification. the camera focuses on the ID and then uses a swipe to clear to the next scene. they do this to make the editing look seamless and smooth as thought it is all in one shot however the effect used in this particular film is used in a different way. they don’t use it to make it look like it is in one take but they do this to cut to the next scene seamlessly.

they also use a worm eye  angle shot to show his feet walking, this adds effect as the speed he is walking makes it seem as though he is eager to complete his work and it shows just how much it means to him.

they also use a zoom to show his facial expression during his flashback to his training. his seriousness on his face shows how much he cares about his job.

a series of fast paced shots begin, with a close up of the characters shoes as he strolls down the corridors of the busy office and a medium shot of the character from the side perspective that matches his pace.

editing –

jump cuts are used in the opening scene of this movie. continuity editing is the main type used by the crew. this gives the film  the feel of an action film which is unusual for Simon Pegg as he usually directs n stars in comedy films. however the facial expressions become gimmicky and it hints towards the films true genre. there is an integral contrast between the shots in the opening scene as they can vary from one extreme to another with very quick transitions that flash into the next scene in front of your own eyes. this gives the cuts a feel of fluidity.

effect on the audience –

the opening sequence to the film is made to entice the audience into watching more of the film. if a film entertains, educates or informs it therefore serves a purpose making the production meaningful. the crew create a sense of action and mystery to keep the audience watching more.
