for this project i am tasked to work individually to create a short film or visual production with a christmas/winter theme.
idea 1
for my first idea i thought about what christmas is and means to me. christmas is a time to relax, spend time with family and enjoy yourself. i associate my grandparents with christmas and i would like my project to be heavily influenced by my family, particularly my grandparents. i would like to create a series of photos based around them and the rest of my family at christmas. i could also incorporate the idea of how families come together at christmas. my family is very distant and don’t see each other often, i think it would be a good idea to show how it brings everybody together to enjoy themselves.

my second idea is similar to idea 1 however it would be a video production documenting christmas and christmas day with my family. on christmas day i travel around from my house, to my dads and then to my grandparents so i think this idea could work as there would be a lot to film.

my 3rd idea is a series of photos to show the struggles parents go through to provide for their family around christmas when the pressure is high. also the struggles parents go through to make their children happy.
i think my first idea fits the brief as it is a visual production related to christmas and the winter season. my idea would be aimed towards 13-16 year olds to capture the essence of what christmas is all about and to shock them into realizing. christmas is a way of companies feeding on the money of the poor and it has turned into a holiday all about greed. children think about the presents and not their time with precious family.
in summary my idea would be idea 1 which is a series of photos documenting the true meaning of christmas and family. i picked this idea because it is more of a realistic idea to go for due to the fact that i have a restricted amount of time and no access to a high quality device to film clips on. i also feel that this idea fits the brief more compared to the others. i feel that idea 2 is not realistic to complete and idea 3 wasn’t as detailed and as fitting to the brief compared to idea 1.
online i have found some documentary photography all about christmas and family which relates to my idea. Colleen Stephanian captured the essence of christmas in her photos, she photographed her families traditions and multiple other families.
i feel that this research is relevant due to the fact that it is heavily influenced by family and christmas spirit. i think this research will influence my work as it is along the same idea however, my final product will be able to distinguish how some families do christmas differently.
these photos were taken by the documentary photographer called Don McCullin. i believe these photos are educational to the target audience as it shows the impacts of war. not just on people living in war zones but also the effects it has on children. i think these photos are impactful due to the fact that it shows harrowing moments of people staring death in the eye, moments before death.
i believe this research can help me as it aims to accomplish the same goal of conveying an important message. these photos are a very good example on how to complete this task and i believe this research will help better my project.
because of unforeseen circumstances, my project had to change due to family issues and no access to a high quality camera. my original idea was based around my grandparents and family time around christmas. i have changed my final idea to how the winter season changes the landscape.
in conclusion, i think the photos i turned out with have come out better than i thought, i believe they show a more creative side than the first initial final idea. the photos are in local places and it shows how nature changes in the winter season. the beach picture is in lytham st.Annes and the rest are of lake windermere in the lake district. i like the photos as i think it provides a contrast in colors. i also particularly like the 2nd to last photo because i used altitude to get a photo of 2 sets of clouds one beneath the other.
