brief
we have been approached by channel 4 to create an idea for a new television show that fits the nature of their programming. they have asked for us to produce a 30 second trailer/advert. i must ensure to show that i have researched and targeted the correct target audience. they also ask that i provide evidence of how i have targeted them with their show.
research
this particular documentary follows the correct codes and conventions to be considered as a documentary, Channel 4 produced this particular documentary to highlight the changes that the 2 teenagers have gone through to better themselves and to follow where they want to be in life. the documentary takes on a factual tone which is key in distinguishing its genre. in this documentary the producers interview two young artists and their families, they follow their footsteps to create a greater understanding of their lives for the viewers. the purpose of this production is to entertain the target audience, however, it can also be considered as educational as the information provided is factual. being set in Blackpool also opens doors to other artists who built up the same platform. in the production they highlight the struggles they faced before they became famous as well as now. i think this particular documentary entices the target audience due to the fact that it is based around working class people who would have a lot in common with the average viewer. being available to watch online is also a benefit as this viewing platform reaches younger audiences than simply putting it on the tv schedule would. the producers have also done their research into what the target audience enjoy and they have approached the idea in a way that is a surefire way of reaching the audience. i think the target audience for this particular video is 14-24 year olds due to the fact that these artists are youtube based and older audiences generally dont enjoy their kind of music as much.
this particular clip is a compilation from the hit channel 4 TV series known as “Phoenix nights”. Phoenix nights is a comedy series produced in 2001. this particular show featured multiple comedians and comedy writers to create a cult classic that is highly regarded as a success. the sole purpose of this particular product was to entertain the target demographic. the show was a particular success in the north of England due to the kind of humour that the utilized, they used “Northern slang” throughout the whole of the show which made the show more relatable for that side of the country, however, through doing this they could be limiting themselves due to misunderstandings or misinterpretations from viewers in other countries or areas due to language barriers.
“Trailer Park Boys” is a Mockumentary created for the viewing platform “Netflix”, this particular show follows the right conventions to be considered a comedy, however it is also seen as a documentary due to the fact that the actors regularly interact with the camera crew and give interviews. i think the way they create this program is clever due to the fact that they regularly break boundaries as though they know their famous and on multiple occasions reference their show. i think this research is relevant to the brief due to the fact that online streaming platforms regularly bring in more viewers from 14-25 year olds than Freeview TV does, i think it is important to understand the differences in production between the two to bring the best of both worlds together and to create a higher quality product.
this channel 4 documentary was produced in an attempt to show different aspects of peoples lives. it was created this way in an attempt to educate the target audience about how actions have consequences. i think this particular documentary was produced and aimed towards 16-25 year olds, i can make this connection due to the age of the cast and the plotline of the documentary. i think this was produced to try and portray the same message with less destructive effects. i think the content is enticing enough to create empathy towards the cast even though they face possible jail time. i think this particular show aims to educate and portray the same message. the production takes on a serious tone to represent the upheaval that the teens have undertaken willingly or forcibly to better their quality of lives. this documentary is also reaching a wider audience due to the fact that it is broadcasted on live tv as well as live streams and episodes on the viewing platform youtube.
idea
As a group we have decided to undertake a “mockumentary” style trailer which takes inspiration from multiple types such as “The Office UK” and “Trailer park boys”. we chose this particular idea due to the fact that we have experimented with this genre in the past and we really enjoyed it. we also decided this idea would be relevant because it fits the nature of Channel 4 and brings something that they don’t currently have to the demographic. I also think this idea is relevant to the target audience as we believe comedy is one of the highest grossing genres and we believe it will be widely accepted.

Final Outcome
Evaluation
Overall, i believe as a group we have completed the brief to a high standard. We conducted relevant research into the genre that we were aiming for and we have followed the correct codes and conventions. i feel like our project meets what the target demographic would wish to see and i believe it is something familiar but still unique for channel 4. I believe my research was relevant and influenced my final product, it particularly helped in pre production because we wrote the script based on the basics of these shows, we did this because we know that they are commercially viable and successful. Personally, i think the whole production went quite well as there weren’t really any points that held us back and we completed the brief to a high standard. the purpose of this particular product was purely to entertain the target demographic. However, we did face some difficulties, during the editing phase we lost an almost finished product twice meaning we had to create the video 3 times. i think if i was to do it again i would fine comb through the editing process to shorten the video down a little bit, for example the title sequences were longer than i expected. i believe that the show was also entertaining for the target demographic due to the fact that it captured the same partially dark humour that shows such as “the office” or “the inbetweeners” utilized. after letting members of our target audience watch the finalized product, we received positive feedback that they are enticed to keep watching and were excited to see a full episode. overall i believe from our feedback, a full episode of this show would be successful.
